Sarojini Naidu: the Nightingale who Courageously Sang and Fought for What is Right
Sarojini Naidu: the Nightingale who Courageously Sang and Fought for What is Right.
February 13th is the Birth Anniversary of Sarojini Naidu. It was 145 years ago this incredible lady was born in Hyderabad in 1879. She was a multifaceted woman, who is remembered for her courage, her active participation in the Indian freedom movement and also for her creative, and motivational poetry.
Sarojini Naidu's birthday (February 13th) is declared as National Women's Day by the Government of India to celebrate all the Indian Women for their significant contribution to society by their active participation in various fields.
Sarojini Naidu fought bravely for women's rights in India, advocated for girls' education, and wanted women to stand on their own feet by becoming economically independent. She encouraged women to explore all fields because she believed that women are equally capable as men. One example could be this interesting story I read on the internet sometime back. Once when Mahatma Gandhi wanted to start the Salt March/ Salt Satyagraha, a nonviolent civil disobedient march, he wanted only men to participate in it. Still, Sarojini Naidu insisted that she would participate in it and also encouraged a few more women like her to take part in this Dandi March which lasted for about 24 days. Gandhi was surprised by Sarojini Naidu's courage and let her take part in it saying that women know more about salt than men.
She became actively involved in politics by becoming a consistent member in the Indian Independence Movement led by Gandhi. She was put into prison for rigorous imprisonment by the British Government. But she never gave up on anything and kept on being courageous.
She also was very service-minded and during the Hyderabad floods and plague epidemic, she helped many people, for which she was given the award 'Kaiser-i-Hind' by then British Government. She later returned this award to the British Government as a protest for the Jullianwala Bagh Massacre.
She was a gifted child, a child prodigy in the true sense as she wrote poetry from her childhood. Her poetry is beautiful and lyrical and she wrote on the topics like beauty, nature, Indian Lifestyle, culture and tradition, and also some poems to motivate others. Some of my favourite poems from her are 'The Bangle Sellers', 'To India', 'Ecstacy' etc. Here are some links for exploring her beautiful poetry: Sarojini Naidu Poetry, Sarojini Naidu Poetry..., Sarojini Naidu Poetry.....
